Time for a New Wireless Router AC1200

Here at Four Corners Computer Center we strongly recommend purchasing your own cable modem. Our reasoning is that the modem that you are using now may be under performing (using DOCSIS 2.0 vs. DOCSIS 3.0 technology). Another reason is money! If you do not have your own modem then you have to lease/rent a modem monthly from your Internet Service Provider (In the Treasure Valley there are pretty much two ISPs: Century Link and Cable One). This rental will cost you upwards of $9.00 per month. There are a few reasons to purchase your own, for one, you OWN it and for two, the cost of the modem will pay for itself within a year. We offer Motorola Surfboard SB6121 and SB6141 series modems.  We buy Motorola products because they use high-quality components and offer the latest technologies and speeds at a price range best suited for our customers, usually around $100. The modems we offer are compatible with Cable One.

Are you one of those people constantly asking: Why is my Internet or my Wi-Fi so slow!? Very often, it is not the Internet provider’s fault. Rather, it all comes down to the type of router you are using and the speed it offers. Wireless-N and Wireless-G are terms referring to 802.11n and 802.11g wireless networking standards. The new standard which we will discuss in further detail below is the 5Ghz AC1200 with blazing speeds.

If you truly want to increase your wireless coverage and download/upload speeds then we recommend using a wireless router that maximizes your ISP and modem’s capabilities. A wireless router broadcasts the modem’s signal wirelessly to other rooms in your home allowing you to use wireless technology on those wireless devices. If you are using an All-In-One (modem/router combo) provided by your ISP it may not have the latest technology or enough signal coverage/reach needed and may be the reason you are experiencing connection issues to the internet or buffering when streaming video content. An important thing to consider when thinking about the router purchase, is what kind of signal coverage/reach you’ll need within your home. Just like modems, routers use different technology/speeds and manufactures can use different quality components.

Here at Four Corners Computer Center we carry 300Mbps series routers which are using fast technology but lack coverage and are primarily for use in smaller spaces like a one or two bedroom apartment. If you want coverage that is 2x greater than N technology, we recommend using the AC1200 router technology which offers the best coverage and fastest speeds. One of our best-performing routers that we can and would highly recommend is the Linksys EA6300 and the EA6100 both equipped with the latest AC1200 technology.
